This will be the first time India has produced Apple's
latest model phone.
The analysis predicts that by 2025, Apple may produce 25% of iPhones in India.
Apple said on Monday local time that it has started
producing the iPhone 14 series in India, less than three weeks after the
company released the series.
According to media reports, Foxconn, Apple's most important
foundry, is producing the iPhone 14 series at its Sriperumbudur factory near
Chennai, India's fourth largest city.
For India, it will be the first time the country has produced Apple's latest model. In 2017, Apple began to manufacture smartphones locally in India, but the products involved have always been older models (such as the iPhone SE) rather than the latest models, and this situation only changed when Apple launched the iPhone 14 series of mobile phones in early September this year.
JPMorgan estimates that by 2025, Apple will make India a global iPhone manufacturing hub. Analysts at the bank said in a report earlier this month that by the end of 2022, Apple will move 5% of global iPhone 14 production to India and expand its manufacturing capacity there, and by 2025, Apple will Likely to produce 25% of iPhones in India.
The iPhone supply chain in India has historically only supplied older models... The share of iPhones in Indian manufacturing may increase in the future.
The bank believes that Apple is now only producing the iPhone 14/14 Plus models in India because of "more complex camera module alignment for the iPhone Pro series (completed by EMS suppliers) and higher demand for the iPhone 14 series in the local market (province) tax). We expect a smaller production scale in Q4 2022 (about 1 million units per month, or 5% of total iPhone sales).”
The Indian-made iPhone 14 is said to go on sale locally later this year to meet huge demand in India, the world's second-largest smartphone market.
Currently, the standard iPhone 14 is priced at 79,900 Indian rupees (about $980) in India, compared to $799 in the US. The entry-level iPhone Pro Max model is priced at $1,717 in India and $1,099 in the US.
Although Apple has a small market share in India, it has been expanding its investments in India over the past five years. Two years ago, Apple launched the Apple Store in India and said it would open the country's first Apple store in the country.
Apple rival Samsung has identified India as an important global manufacturing hub and has built a large factory in the country. According to recent media reports, Google is also planning to move some Pixel smartphone production to India.
